TV Commercials

Boy, now there's a loaded topic for me. Some are fun and entertaining. Most are not. The majority of them annoy the heck out of me for one reason or another. And I'm not easily annoyed well okay, maybe a little more easily annoyed than I like to admit. But not the yelling and screaming type well okay, maybe there is a little yelling sometimes, but no screaming. Honest.

There are the commercials that use fear to get you to want to buy their product or service. You know what I mean, my God, heaven forbid that your house just smell like your house. No it has to smell like a spring morning or something. When did an air freshener take the place of soap and water? There are no air fresheners (or scents of any kind) used in our house and our guests do not fall over in a dead faint soon upon entering. And we have an indoor only cat! Nor do they seem to want to bury their noses in our carpeting, for which I am forever grateful. Now that's a really stupid commercial. Let's all just snuff up all those possibly bad for us chemicals just as hard as we can.

One of my biggest fears is that someone will invent YardScents or some such thing. I can see the commercials now with a voice over that is saying, "Does your yard smell like dirt (the camera is on some rich brown soil in a flower bed)? Does the smell of all that fresh air annoy you (video of the leaves in a tree fluttering in the wind)? Then you need YardScents. Try our Very Cherry Bliss or our newest YardScent, Chock Full 'O' Chocolate. Your neighbors will love you and you will never have to worry again."

Then there are the commercials that run during every single break during one specific program. I wonder from time to time if they couldn't possibly charge less for their services or products if they just stopped airing their commercials so darn many times. I guess they've bought into their own fear mongering and are terrified that if they stop reminding us five times an hour that we will forget about them. Well they might be right about that one, but would that be such a bad thing?

One commercial that I do enjoy is for Chef Boyardee mini raviolis. In it the Mom is trying desperately to get the Dad to shut up before he lets out the secret to their son that each serving contains one whole serving of vegetables. Makes me smile every time I see it.

Then there are the totally inane commercials. Just last night I saw one for instant macaroni and cheese in a box. In it the voice over announced that you get four (I think it was four, might have been three) bowls for under a dollar. Just try going to the store and demanding four bowls with every box that you buy. They were nice blue bowls in the commercial. The orangish macaroni and cheese looked particularly nice in them. I like blue bowls.

Weather

To my way of thinking, weather is just weather. It's what it is and nothing more. Why can't the weather people on television (I seem to be having a problem with television today) just give you the forecast? Why must they say that tomorrow will be "nice" with mostly sun and just a few clouds? Why is the weather "bad" if it rains or snows? Why is warmer better than cooler (except if you live in Phoenix and it is summer, then cooler is definitely better, we don't live in Phoenix thank goodness) and dryer better than wetter (again except if you live in Phoenix and it is summer)? Then there is that word, "inclement," which simplistically means severe, harsh, or stormy. Okay, yeah, you could say that freezing rain and 30 mile per hour winds for the next 24 hours is inclement. But a 20% chance of scattered thundershowers I don't think so. Hey weather people, lose the big words and just gives us the forecast. We are perfectly capable of deciding how we feel about the weather all on our little lonesomes. Oh and one more thing. Weather people listen up, presenting the forecast does not have to be an entertainment extravaganza. Come on, it's just the weather and besides you only get it right about 50% of the time and that's being polite.

Some More Things I Have Learned

Always look before sitting down.

Don't take yourself too seriously; no one else does.

Dogs will sometimes bite you for no apparent reason.

If you want to find something, you actually have to look for it.

You don't always get the title right the first time. For example, this probably should have been titled, "Random Rants," instead.

Dianne,

What a hoot!    You gave me a laugh early in the morning and I thank you.  So true, so true.  I especially love the drug commercials that spend half of their 60 second lengths telling you about the adverse effects of said pill.   Personally, I don't think they should be advertising at all.  Why not let your doctor decide what you need?  That's his job.

Thank you for a wonderful rant!

Hi Nancy.

I try not to think about the drug commercials at all, those really get me riled. Actually, you don't want to get me started about drugs at all. I have had some recommended to me by doctors that when I read about them, I refused to take them. And guess what, I got better anyway!

Thanks so much for reading and commenting. I am happy to have given you a chuckle or two.

Hi Dianne, thanks for the laugh. I am with you all the way. Commercials for the most part are annoying 98% of the time I don't know what they are are trying to sell, the product or the girl--or is the girl the product???

Thanks for the smile. Hugs, Teresa

Hi Teresa.

I think the girl is the prod-uct. Get it? Prod. Maybe the wind has gotten into my brain. It was so windy here today that we lost electricity for a few hours.

I'm happy to give you a smile any time.
Hugs,
Dianne
