Die hard "Star Trek" fans have one more thing to be thankful for. If the invention of real life communicators (cell phones) was not enough, they now have one more thing to add to their arsenal. They can say take it on the chin to all those who pooh-poohed the television series, the movies and the good people who have never given up hope. They can tell all the naysayers to go jump in a black hole for decrying "Star Trek" as just science fiction or worse yet fantasy.

Why is that you ask. Because one of the mainstays of Star Trek (featured in the theatrical movie Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home) has now become a reality. Researchers at Oxford have created transparent aluminum. Yes, you read that correctly. They did it by bombarding the metal with the world's strongest soft X-ray laser. " a short pulse from the FLASH laser 'knocked out' a core electron from every aluminum atom in a sample without disrupting the metal's crystalline structure. This turned the aluminum nearly invisible to extreme ultraviolet radiation."

Okay, so the power required to do this was phenomenal, the sample bombarded was miniscule and the effect lasted for only a fraction of a second (about 40 femtoseconds), still it is with small steps that all great things are eventually accomplished. Fellow Trekkies take heart, we're on our way to the stars!

And another Star Trek breakthrough. Quite a bit of Star Trek techno is or coming to be actual. When flip top mobile phones came out, my son downloaded the original beep to use as a ring tone for his sms! LOL

As more and more of Star Trek's "gimmicks" make it into the mainstream (do we even notice anymore that many doors in retail establishments slide open sideways all on their own as we approach?), I am heartened and filled with hope for the future. For me, the Star Trek milieu is the epitome, in many ways of enlightened cooperation between all of the cultures and races of earth. Not to mention with the Galaxy.
