In August

In August when the air is thick with cicada song and the disapproval of hummingbirds (tsk! tsk! tsk!),
When the air is hot and daunting and the sun so intense that even the lizard forgoes his basking,
When the night air is heavy and the bed sheet alone is too much, I dream about cooler times and cooler climes.
In August when the air simmers over the ground, shimmering, and rises up in fat waves to slither around the ankles of your bare feet,
When the sky is hard and blue and the sun is dizzying to behold, I dream of cooler times and cooler climes.
In August when all your windows and doors are open to the night, hoping for a breath of cool night air,
When the coyote yips in your backyard and the hoot owl sings on his search for mice and the javelina forage for the apples fallen from your tree,
When sleep comes hard and late and hot, or sometimes seemingly not at all, still I sometimes dream.
In August, when the night sky is blacker than black and each star a pinpoint of bright light colored red, blue and white,
When the Milky Way is a glimmering swath of brightness, a dusting of jewels in the necklace of the heavens,
When the day gives over its heat to the darkness and the darkness its secrets to the day, sometimes I dream.
But then I wake and I dream no more for I know there is never a better time to be alive.

More commentsAugust or September, the air breathes on. Life is as much the same. Dianne. August may need to sleep in an air-con room.Interesting article !Hi Hilda. You might be right about the air conditioning. I know that Bernd would certainly like it. But I have even more trouble sleeping with the air conditioner on than with it off and when I do I wake up with a splitting headache. So that's not really in my cards.I'm glad you found it interesting. Thanks for commenting!Dianne
I loved this Dianne! It put me right there. (And I don't mind the heat) I've never been to Arizona but I hope to visit one day.Hi Brianna. The woman who owns the horses that I "play" with is originally from Canada. She loves the heat and the summer. Hates the winter. Guess she had enough of the snow growing up in Canada.I can highly recommend Arizona for a vacation. I think the best times to visit are March through May and October through November. But that is just me. And the Grand Canyon is pretty all year long.I'm glad you enjoyed this and thanks for commenting.Hugs,DianneHugs,
Dianne, Very nice. Nice job of capturing the moment-we want more!Hi Bing. Thanks so much. As I was saying to Marijo Phelps, I have some horse inspired poems that maybe I'll try submitting. I'd be very curious to know what you might think of them. Thanks for reading and commenting. I always appreciate it.Hugs,Dianne
Hey sis! How are you doing?August here in India is so hot and humid that its very irritating time for us to spend time here.Great write up this is. Keep writing...Hi Chiradeep!I've heard about Monsoon in India. I don't think I would survive it. :) And generally, I am doing well. How about you? Of course, if I'd kept up better with my reading, I might have a clue. :(Thanks so much and I'll do my best to keep writing things worthy of reading.Hugs,Dianne
Very beautiful Dianne! You should have been a poet, but I guess you know it. Thank you for this wonderful piece of work.Hi David.Poetry is some of the first stuff I ever wrote. Mostly it was full of teenaged angst. :) I look at some of the really old poems I wrote and have to laugh sometimes. But I do enjoy poetry for the freedom of it.Thank you for reading it and commenting on it. Much appreciated. My best to you,Dianne
Great Job, Dianne. Been away from searchwarp for a while - and I'm blaming it on facebook. ha ha, Enjoy your take on August. Dave PotchakHi Dave. How could you let FB take you away from SW? :) :) Seriously ... no judgement. Glad you enjoyed it!Thanks so much for reading.Take care, have fun and be happy,Diannefacebook is going to have to go - I can't get anything else done - Dianne, you are right, how could I replace SW? Dave
Each season and month has it's own value and beauty- It's been so unusually scorching hot here in the Houston area, Almost all my plants have burnt up! I was just thinking this morning about planting some plants that grow naturally in Arizona, maybe they would do better here now- LOL- Thanks- Always- EllaHi Ella.I've often thought about letting our yard go "natural." But our property owner's association won't allow it. :) Pity, that. Less work for me. Oh well. But we do have a lot of drought resistant plants in our yard. One that is tasty and pretty darn hardy is rosemary. But you can't have your whole yard planted in rosemary ... right?Anyway, thanks for reading and commenting.Hugs,Dianne
ooh, cool, dianne.very nice choice of words.extremely picturesque.thank you,my best,sueHi Sue.Thanks a bunch! And thanks for reading it.Hugs,Dianne
Bravo! You've done a beautiful job! I'm a frustrated warm climate lover. Would be most happy to be in warmer weather year-round. Years ago, we took a 6 week vacation and went cross country starting with the southern route and returning by a northern route. When I went through Flagstaff I fell in love with the area. Totally. Anyway this evokes my memories of an awesome time!Hi Heidi.I grew up in Southern California where the weather was basically the same all the time ... warm, warmer, really warm. So I actually like the cooler months here in Arizona much better. Of course, we don't get snow like you do in Connecticut so I can say that I like the snow. I've always called our snows "tourist snow" because it is pretty, doesn't last long and generally isn't much of an inconvenience. There have been a few exceptions. But getting snowed in has it's own charm when it isn't a regular event.Flagstaff is pretty neat, but it is way too busy for me. Can't beat the pines for beauty though.Glad you liked my poem. And thanks for reading and commenting.Hugs,Dianne
Hi Dianne,August is hotest month in my region, the temperature will reach to 39℃ ~ 42℃, and I live in a a city which people call it - furnace.Good article, thanks for sharing.Hi Island of Briar.Plus you have the humidity as well, no doubt. Now that it's September, our temps have started to cool a bit. The Monsoon is officially over with the winds prevailing once more from the west and the air is drying to create the prickly static electricity we have most of the year. Our cat, Winnie, is learning all over again to move her ears out of the way when I reach for her head so I don't zap her ear tips! Thanks so much for reading and commenting!Hugs,Dianne
